A car alarm that went off in a garage apparently frightened off three men attempting to rob a 57-year-old Huntington Beach man at gunpoint shortly after midnight, authorities said Sunday.

The victim, James Y. Chang, told police that he was surprised by the men at 12:16 a.m. after he drove into the garage of his home on Red Coach Drive, said Sgt. Brian Tidrick of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

Chang said he was getting out of his car when he was confronted by three men described as in their 30s, wearing dark clothing and armed with semiautomatic handguns, Tidrick said.

“The suspects ordered him to open his residence . . . but he was able to activate an audible alarm on one of his vehicles,” Tidrick said.

The alarm frightened the men, who ran away and were last seen driving east on Red Coach Drive in a white, American-made four-door car, Tidrick said.

No one was injured and there was no loss reported, Tidrick said.
