OUTLOOK

On paper, Keith sees a lot of similarities between this team and last season’s squad. “We had the stereotypical rebuilding season last year and went through all those kinds of struggles,” Keith said. “And looking at it this year from an experience standpoint, it looks like we’re almost in a rebuilding year again, but I think we are considerably better.” Keith, in his eighth season at Irvine, thinks the Vaqueros have a more talented team from top to bottom. His mission will be to find a lineup that can combine to do more than individual things well. “We’ve got guys who are good shooters and some who are good shot-blockers and some who are good rebounders, but we don’t have too many guys who do a lot of things well,” Keith said. “Those are the kinds of things we need to focus on, getting guys to play the whole game.” Irvine will be smaller than in any of Keith’s previous seasons, but he expects Carlson to provide interior defense and shot-blocking. Parker led the team in scoring over the summer, and joins Hill and Guinn as three-point threats.
