Dennis Dixon, a long-time Golden West football assistant, has been hired as Rustler coach, athletic director Tom Hermsted said Tuesday.

Dixon, who played at Fullerton College and Alabama, has been the offensive line coach at Golden West the last 18 seasons. Dixon replaces Ray Shackleford, who was forced to resign this season after 29 years.

“I always wanted to be head coach,” Dixon said. “I’ve always wanted to be able to guide and lead young men.”

Dixon was a junior college All-American for Fullerton in 1966, then played two seasons for Paul (Bear) Bryant at Alabama. He also worked at Alabama as a graduate assistant.

“Ray put a lot of guys on scholarship,” Dixon said. “And that’s what we want to continue doing. But there’s going to be a lot of changes on offense and defense.”
