An Oxnard man was seriously wounded Wednesday night in an apparent gang-related drive-by shooting in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood, authorities said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was walking alone on Colonia Road about 7 p.m. when he was shot in the shoulder from a passing car, Oxnard police said.

He was in surgery at St. John’s Regional Medical Center late Wednesday, but hospital officials would not characterize his condition.

“It is pretty well confirmed it was a gang shooting,” Police Cmdr. Bob Elder said.

After he was shot, the man--described by acquaintances as about 20 years old--staggered down the street toward Herrera Bakery, said Frank Herrera, whose mother called police.

“My parents heard the gunshot,” Herrera said. “My mom went out, but all she saw was him on the floor.”
