Professional boxing has found a permanent home in the suburbs of the West Valley.

The Warner Center Marriott Hotel will play host to monthly boxing shows throughout 1995, promoter Peter Broudy said Tuesday.

The next fight night, Jan. 18, will feature a bout between Irish Pat Lawlor (20-6, six knockouts) and Randy (Big Man) Smith (13-1-2, four knockouts) for the vacant state middleweight title.

Scheduled for the second card, Feb. 22, is a bout between Palmdale’s P.J. Goossen (13-0, 11 knockouts) and Kenny Lopez, the state junior middleweight champion. Dates of the other shows are March 8, April 12, May 10, June 14, July 12, Aug. 9, Sept. 20, Oct. 25, Nov. 15 and Dec. 13.

Once a popular fixture at the Country Club in Reseda, professional boxing had dried up in the San Fernando Valley before Broudy’s first card last month brought an upscale clientele to the hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

Now Broudy has signed a 12-show contract with the hotel--”A good deal for everybody,” he said.

Boxing’s resurgence hasn’t come without controversy. Broudy’s first show at the Marriott, on Nov. 2, was marred by mass confusion when the fire marshal ordered event organizers to change venue’s seating arrangement only hours before the scheduled first bell.

Refunds for more than 300 tickets were drawn that night, but on a second try, Nov. 23, the show ran smoothly and profitably.

Broudy, who grew up in Van Nuys, was instrumental in boxing’s decade-long stay at the Country Club. He likes his new venue even better.

“It’s a good site and it has a good clientele,” Broudy said. “People like going to a place that’s safe.”
