Miami Dolphin Coach Don Shula will undergo outpatient surgery today in Miami to repair a ruptured right Achilles’ tendon, but he expects to be on the sidelines for Monday night’s game against Kansas City.

Shula, 64, sustained the injury while walking to his office after practice Wednesday. Surgery was scheduled after an MRI exam on Thursday.

The operation will require Shula to miss a regular-season practice for the first time in his 25 years with the Dolphins.

Rookie star Marshall Faulk was hospitalized in Indianapolis as a precaution after developing a virus.

“He has the virus. It’s just that the team felt he could get the best care in the hospital,” club spokesman Craig Kelley said of the running back.

Coach Ted Marchibroda said that he anticipates Faulk will play Sunday at New England.

“We don’t think it’s any problem of a serious nature,” Marchibroda said. “It’s not anything that we’re concerned with at this point.”

Seattle Seahawk defensive tackle Mike Frier, paralyzed in a car crash in which two teammates also were hurt, sat up for the first time since surgery.

His neck was taken out of traction Wednesday, allowing him to sit up 30 to 40 degrees. He did so without feeling dizzy, said Ann Evans, spokeswoman for Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue, Wash.

Frier’s condition has improved, but he remains in serious condition.

Kirkland police, meanwhile, received blood-alcohol and polygraph results as they continued their investigation of the single-car accident last Thursday night.

Tampa Bay Buccaneer special teams standout Curtis Buckley is appealing a $7,500 fine the NFL levied against him for a tough hit on Brian Mitchell of the Washington Redskins.

Buckley leveled Mitchell on the opening kickoff last Sunday, forcing a fumble that he recovered. The Redskin returner remained on the ground for several minutes but was not seriously injured.

The NFL ruled that Buckley led with the crown of his helmet, although the reserve safety maintained he hit Mitchell with his shoulder.
