Many dream of ending their high school careers this way but Darrel Dent now knows what it feels like.

The senior quarterback ran for 265 yards and three touchdowns and passed for another to lead Montclair Prep to a 53-13 victory over Orange Lutheran in the Southern Section Division X championship game Saturday night at Valley College.

“Coach (George Giannini) wanted me to go out in fashion,” Dent said. “He said to go out in style.”

Dent, who had eight carries, was downright dapper in leading the Mounties (11-1) to their second section title in three seasons and third since 1990.

He scored on runs of 91, eight and 42 yards and had a 47-yard touchdown pass play as Orange Lutheran (11-3) keyed on stellar running back Akil Anderson.

“When we motioned our backs, they shifted everyone to that side and we had the bootleg open for Darrel,” Giannini said.

Anderson, who had gained 871 yards in the previous three playoff games, still rushed for 116 yards in 30 carries and scored twice, including a one-yard run in the third quarter when the Mounties scored 20 unanswered points after leading, 19-13, at halftime.

The Mounties took advantage of fumbles by Orange Lutheran’s Che Holloway on back-to-back kickoff returns to blow the game open in the third quarter. They turned both turnovers into scores, the first on the run by Anderson and moments later on a four-yard run by Demetrius Green, who also scored in the fourth quarter.

Those came after Dent had connected with wide receiver Kenny Peffer on a 47-yard pass play early in the quarter.

“Coach told us (at halftime) to go out there and maintain our level of consistency and we would be all right,” Dent said.

Orange Lutheran had seven turnovers, including three passes thrown by quarterback Joe Juliano that were intercepted by Henry Bell, Langston Woodberry and Mark Zone.

The Mounties got a break right at the start and capitalized on it.

On the game’s first offensive play, Juliano fumbled the snap and linebacker Will Tuccio recovered at the Lancer 47-yard line.

Montclair Prep took eight plays to score, with Anderson capping it with a one-yard run.

The Lancers marched 67 yards in six plays on the ensuing possession, but failed in three attempts to to score from the Montclair Prep one-yard line.

On third and goal from the one, Tuccio and safety Kenny Peffer stopped Juliano, and Woodberry stopped Holloway on the next play.

The Mounties struck quickly after that on a 91-yard sprint along the left sideline by Dent for a 13-0 advantage late in the first quarter.

Orange Lutheran pulled to within 13-7 early in the second quarter on a three-yard pass from Juliano to tight end Aaron Kenney.
