Dr. David Michaels; Taught at UCLA

Dr. David D. Michaels, 69, leading ophthalmologist who taught at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute. He lectured and wrote widely, contributing articles to the American Journal of Ophthalmology and other professional journals. His book, “Visual Optics & Refraction--A Clinical Approach,” was popular in advanced study programs. Michaels earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from Illinois Institute of Technology, a bachelor’s in physics and chemistry from Roosevelt University in Chicago, and a bachelor’s and doctorate in medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He maintained a private practice in San Pedro for more than three decades and chaired the ophthalmology department at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital. He was also on staff at UCLA, Bay Harbor, Torrance Memorial and Long Beach Memorial hospitals and Harbor UCLA Medical Center. Michaels also taught at Northwestern, Loyola of Chicago and Roosevelt universities. Off duty, Michaels was an artist, specializing in oil painting and award-winning miniature military figurines. On Nov. 13 in Los Angeles of cancer.
