A 13-year-old boy taking a shortcut home by crossing a freeway was struck and killed, a California Highway Patrol officer said Monday.
Steven Moreno of Santa Ana died about 7:30 p.m. Sunday after he ran in front of a vehicle traveling north about 55 m.p.h. in the fast lane of the Santa Ana Freeway at Broadway, CHP Officer Angel Johnson said. “It was dark and the driver didn’t see him coming,” Johnson said.
A 14-year-old boy “right behind him” was not injured, Johnson said. Both boys had been shopping at MainPlace, she said.
Traffic in a five-mile stretch from the accident scene was backed up for more than two hours, Johnson said. The driver was not cited.
