Trees and computers: they go together in Irvine. The Public Works Department keeps a detailed computer record of each of the city’s 38,000 trees, including when each tree was last trimmed.

During fiscal 1994-95, the city will trim 4,658 trees in the villages of University Park, Turtle Rock, California Homes and the Ranch. Some 1,446 eucalyptus trees, planted to form windrows in the city, will also be trimmed in the villages of El Camino Real and Woodbridge.

As the number of trees increases in the 23-year-old city, tree counters in the Public Works Department have found it cumbersome to keep track of them on the city’s mainframe computer. They’re currently downloading all tree records into a PC-based system.
