A New Look, a New Feel

Generally, the Ahmanson Theatre is less boxy than it was before its $17.1-million renovation, which will be unveiled at a rededication ceremony tonight. A circular design now dominates the acoustic paneling on the ceiling, as well as the shape of the pushed-forward balcony (top) and mezzanine.

Six boxes have been added to each of the sides (left) to reduce the width of the hall, improve acoustics and provide a greater sense of community among audiences. Twenty-year use of the boxes on opening nights (plus other privileges) is available for $500,000 for a lower box and $350,000 on the balcony level. So far, final negotiations are pending on two of the lower boxes and only one of the upper boxes is taken (so there is still time for last-minute Christmas shoppers). The purple and gold interior is more hospitable than the former black and red design. The theater’s exterior has also received a face lift, as seen in before (far left) and almost-after (near left) photos.

The box office has been moved from the center of the facade to the west side. The forecourt won’t be finished for tonight’s rededication; the invitation-only audience will enter from the rear. A new bust of banker and philanthropist Howard Ahmanson, for whom the theater is named, will be displayed in the lobby (above, right).
