Emmitt Smith’s consecutive game streak with the Dallas Cowboys could end Saturday at 82.

Smith, who pulled a hamstring in the third quarter of Monday night’s victory against New Orleans, reported for treatment Tuesday. And the report wasn’t good for someone who wants to play football this weekend.

“He has swelling in the hamstring and it’s sore,” team physician Robert Vandermeer said. “I would think he would have a good chance of being well by the first playoff game. Things like this are difficult to predict.”

The game against the New York Giants in the Meadowlands means nothing to Dallas, but playing means everything to Smith.

“I just want in for one play so I can keep my streak alive,” Smith said. “They can let (quarterback) Troy (Aikman) throw the ball or something.”

Coach Barry Switzer said, “Emmitt was worse today than he was last night. . . . If he thinks he can play and help us win, he’ll play.”

Seattle Seahawk owner Ken Behring met with former Stanford and San Francisco 49er Coach Bill Walsh but wouldn’t reveal the nature of the discussion, and it’s not known whether Walsh is a potential candidate for a job or was sought out as an adviser. . . . Arizona quarterback Jay Schroeder did not practice Tuesday because of a knee injury, but said he expects to start in Saturday’s regular-season finale at Atlanta. . . . Washington Redskin General Manager Charley Casserly will remain with the team, owner Jack Kent Cooke told The Washington Times. The Redskins waived second-year linebacker Lamont Hollinquest from USC, three days after he skipped a practice and team meetings. . . . Florida millionaire George Lindemann said his offer to buy the Buccaneers and keep them in Tampa was rejected.
