A 38-year-old man died Wednesday after the driver of a pickup broadsided his vintage sports car, causing a three-vehicle collision that also left the truck’s driver and another motorist injured, authorities said Thursday.

The victim, John Stanley Magera of Santa Ana, was turning left onto Warner Avenue from Wintersburg Avenue when a pickup heading west on Warner Avenue struck the driver’s side of his car, said Fountain Valley police Sgt. Kevin McKeown. A third car heading west on Warner rear-ended the pickup, he said.

Magera was unconscious and trapped in the car when paramedics arrived, said Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob McVey. It took firefighters 20 minutes to extract him, McVey said.

McKeown said Magera was airlifted to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died 3 1/2 hours later.

The two other drivers involved in the collision were treated for minor injuries at different area hospitals and released, McKeown said. None of the drivers were cited. Police are investigating the accident.
