They Have Their Own Notes for Malamud . . .
Allan Malamud (Dec. 13) states, “It’s time for the most routine play in football, the conversion kick, to be eliminated. Instead, teams should line up at the three-yard line and try to run or pass for a one-point conversion.”
Malamud is partly right. The conversion kick should be eliminated, but so should the conversion attempt altogether. A former NFL commissioner, Bert Bell, long ago tried to eliminate the PAT, but to no avail. He wanted to count a touchdown as seven points.
He reasoned that most PATs are about as exciting as watching an ice cube melt. More important, if a touchdown counted seven points, then two field goals would not equal a touchdown.
Bert Bell was ahead of his time. His reasoning was accurate and logical, which is why it will never be fulfilled.
