Bell-Jeff High football Coach Doug Woodlief said Friday he has applied for the vacant coaching job at his alma mater, the University of Memphis.

Woodlief said he received a letter back from the school and does not know which candidates will be interviewed or when a new coach will be selected.

Memphis fired Chuck Stobart on Dec. 14. Stobart had led the Tigers to three consecutive 6-5 seasons, marking the first time in 17 years that Memphis had three winning records in a row.

But Stobart’s tenure was marred this season when, after an 0-3 start, 80 players boycotted a practice in protest of Stobart’s methods.

Woodlief played linebacker for the Tigers when they went 9-0-1 in 1963. He played for the Rams from 1965-69. He was inducted to the school’s athletic hall of fame last fall.

In 10 seasons at Bell-Jeff, Woodlief’s teams have posted a 36-63-2 record, including 6-5 in 1994.
