COLLEGE FOOTBALL: THE BOWLS : ROSE
The Nittany Lions, relocated in the Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, are getting two days off after going through three two-a-day drills under Coach Joe Paterno at UC Irvine.
The Big Ten champions, 112 strong, arrived in Southern California a week earlier than most Rose Bowl teams and spent their first five days at the Hilton Waterfront Resort in Huntington Beach before moving to Costa Mesa.
“We hadn’t had but one real workout since our last game (Nov. 26) so we worked them pretty hard after we got here,” Paterno said. “Now we’re going to give them a rest because we don’t want a bunch of heavy-legged kids for the game.”

Five Penn State seniors have been elected captain for the Rose Bowl: quarterback Kerry Collins and center Bucky Greeley on offense, and linebackers Brian Gelzheiser and Willie Smith and tackle Vic Stewart on defense.
