COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : UC Santa Barbara Stuns No. 20 New Mexico State

Guard Lelan McDougal scored 17 points to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 75-65 Big West Conference victory over 20th-ranked New Mexico State on Tuesday night before 5,064 at Santa Barbara.

Forwards Doug Muse and Mark Flick each scored 14 points for the Gauchos, who made 50.9% of their shots, 53.3% in building a 41-35 halftime lead.

Santa Barbara (6-2, 1-0) also got 11 points from forward Wayne Butts and 10 from guard Tecon Madden.

New Mexico State (9-3, 0-1) was led by reserve Troy Brewer, who scored 19 points.

No. 4 Massachusetts 95, West Virginia 65--The Minutemen (6-1) rolled over the Mountaineers (4-4) at Springfield, Mass., making 12 three-point shots and blocking 20 shots, two more than West Virginia made.

No. 5 Kansas 106, East Tennessee State 73--Raef LaFrentz, a 6-foot-11 freshman forward, had 20 points and eight rebounds to help the Jayhawks (9-1) romp past the Buccaneers (4-6) at Lawrence, Kan.

Seven-foot center Greg Ostertag blocked four shots to break the all-time Kansas record of 200 held by Danny Manning.

No. 6 Connecticut 77, Villanova 62--Ray Allen, returning after sitting out a game because of a sprained right ankle, scored 19 points to lead the Huskies (8-0, 2-0) over the Wildcats (7-4, 1-1) in a Big East game at Philadelphia.

No. 10 Syracuse 81, Boston College 72--Lawrence Moten scored 28 points, 12 during a first-half run that brought Syracuse from one point behind to 13 ahead, to help the Orangemen (9-1, 2-0) defeat the Eagles (6-3, 0-2) in a Big East game at Newton, Mass.

No. 12 Georgetown 55, Pittsburgh 46--Allen Iverson scored 15 points to help the Hoyas (8-1, 2-0) hold off the Panthers (4-6, 0-2) in a turnover-filled Big East game at Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh set a conference record with 35 turnovers and made only 31.3% of its shots but led by four points with 10 minutes to play before Georgetown, which had 19 turnovers and made only 32% of its shots, pulled away.

Louisiana State 70, No. 13 Florida 66--Freshman Randy Livingston scored 22 points, including five free throws in the final minute, to help the Tigers (7-3, 1-0) to a Southeastern Conference victory over the Gators (6-3, 0-1) at Baton Rouge, La.

Livingston, who also had 11 assists and five steals, made all but one of his free throws as the Tigers held off a last-minute rally by Florida.

No. 16 Iowa State 74, Loyola New Orleans 44--Julius Michalik had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cyclones (11-1) over the Wolfpack (4-8) at Ames, Iowa.

Iowa State set a school record with its ninth consecutive victory.

Reed Jackson had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists, the first triple-double in school history, to lead Evansville (7-2) to a 93-60 victory over New Hampshire (6-3) at Evansville, Ind. . . . Jon Kinloch scored 18 points to lead defending West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga (10-1) to a 75-55 victory over Idaho (4-6) at Spokane, Wash.

Sean Flannery scored 21 points as San Diego (4-6) ended a five-game losing streak with a 72-59 victory over Yale (2-5) at San Diego. . . . Gerald Walker scored 28 points to lead San Francisco (6-7) to a 93-81 victory over Brown (4-6) at San Francisco. . . . Chris Miskel scored 20 points to help Butler (7-4) to a 90-62 victory over Cal State Sacramento (2-10) at Indianapolis.
