Yusef Johnson

SCHOOL: Hueneme

SPORT: Basketball

YEAR: Senior

SEASON AT A GLANCE: Although Johnson chose not to play basketball at Hueneme last season, the 5-foot-11 point guard hasn’t missed a step. Through the first 12 games of the season, he was leading the team in scoring (17.3 points per game) and assists (7.5). “He’s definitely a dangerous three-point shooter and an excellent penetrator,” Coach Howard Davis said. He is one of the key reasons Hueneme has gone from 2-21 last season to a 5-8 record this season.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Johnson began the week with 20 points and seven assists in a one-point loss to Ventura. He helped the Vikings get over the hump on Friday night. Against Santa Barbara, which had won 15 consecutive Channel League games dating to 1993, Johnson scored 37 points--11 in the fourth quarter--had eight assists and nine steals to lead the Vikings to a 71-68 upset. He made 14 of 18 shots from the field, including three of five from three-point range, and made six of six free throws. He also held all-league point guard Mike Garrett to 12 points. “He played a complete game Friday night,” Davis said. “It was an unbelievable all-around effort.”
