I received “Life’s Little Instruction Book” as a holiday gift and am quite taken with the author’s advice to read a book about beekeeping. Well, my instructions to readers are to take note of the autographing authors, screenwriting and book proposal seminars, storytelling for children, poetry reading and used book sales occurring this week.

Tonight at 7, travel expert Bob Carter, author of “The Best of Central California,” will sign his book at Barnes & Noble, 4360 E. Main St., Ventura.

There may still be an opportunity to attend the weekend screenwriting workshop conducted by the award-winning writer and actress, Katherine Ann Jones, which is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Ojai Art Center, 113 S. Montgomery St. Call 646-8946.

Books are probably the most recycled, environmentally sound commodity we, the people, have ever created. And they go on and on without batteries. So, pencil in the used book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Newbury Park branch of the Thousand Oaks Library, 2331 Borchard Road.

Local author James Daniel Quinn will sign copies of his short story collection, “The Art of Survival,” based on his extensive travels in Europe and Africa, at 2 p.m. Saturday in Barnes & Noble, Ventura.

Michael Silberblatt will interview Anne Lamott, author of “Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life” about the techniques she uses to teach fiction to writers with creative and emotional blocks. The interview will be at 2 p.m. Monday on public radio’s KCRU Oxnard at 89.1 FM; in Ojai at 102.1 FM and in the Santa Paula, Moorpark, Fillmore areas at 102.3 FM.

The literary magazine Bakunin, edited by Jordon Jones, will celebrate publication of the winter, 1995, issue at a poetry reading at 8:30 p.m. Monday in the Vampyre Lounge Cafe, 655 E.
