Dog Park

Opponents of the Silver Lake dog park complain that giving some of the city’s park space over to dogs is outrageous when there is already too little for humans (Jan. 7). I would like to point out that dog owners are human beings. Playing fetch and enjoying the antics of frolicking dogs is human recreation.

Establishing a small area specifically for dog-owning humans is no different than creating areas specifically for tennis-playing humans, golf-playing humans, or humans who expect parks to provide safe playgrounds for their children. The Los Angeles City Council has not created a park for dogs; it is a park intended for the safety and enjoyment of their human companions.
