Jockey Julie Krone was released from a hospital in Hollywood, Fla., Sunday after having two pins surgically inserted in the small finger on her left hand, which she broke Friday in her second major spill in 17 months.

“The cast is scheduled to be removed in three weeks and then she’ll be able to get on horses,” said Krone’s agent, Larry Cooper.

The pins were inserted near the knuckle of the finger Saturday at Memorial Hospital to heal the hairline fracture. Her hand was put in a hard cast.

Krone was getting over her first spill when she was tossed from her mount at Gulfstream Park.

Krone is the only female jockey to win a Triple Crown race, riding Colonial Affair in the 1993 Belmont Stakes.

On Aug. 30, 1993, she was in a near-fatal spill at Saratoga. She resumed racing last May, required further surgery on her ankle in November and returned to the saddle Jan. 4 at Gulfstream.

Before Friday’s spill, she was the track’s top jockey with 10 victories in 40 mounts.

Limit notched her first stakes victory, finishing 4 1/2 lengths in front of Quite Proper in the $50,000-added Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct in New York. Ring by Spring was another half-length behind in third in the field of seven 3-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Richard Migliore and carrying 114 pounds, Limit advanced steadily down the backstretch to take command after six furlongs, drawing off through the stretch to cover the 1 mile and 70 yards in 1:44 3/5 over the “fast” inner track. The Billy Mott-trained filly, a daughter of Cox’s Ridge, earned her third victory in six lifetime starts and $32,640 for owners Claiborne Farm and Nicole P. Gorman.

Foxy Scarlet, sent off as the 4-5 favorite, weakened to finish a well-beaten fifth.

Mistress S., ridden by Jose Santos, finished strongly to win the $50,000 Sweetest Chant Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla.

Mistress S., timed in 1:45 3/5, went off at 8-1. Mia’s Hope, two lengths behind, ran second at 38-1 and Clever Thing was third at 34-1. The $2 trifecta of 2-12-11 returned $6,090.80.

Friendly Beauty came from far back to finish fourth in a field of 11 going 1 1/16 miles. Sneaky Quiet, the 7-5 favorite, never was a factor.

Midway down the backstretch, Lady She Is Too had the lead. Clever Thing was second, followed by Mia’s Hope, who was three lengths ahead of Mistress S. Friendly Beauty was ninth.

Turning for home, Lady She Is Too, Mia’s Hope and Clever Thing were even. Mistress S. was in fourth on the outside.

Lady She Is Too weakened inside the eighth pole, and Clever Thing and Mia’s Hope struggled for the lead. At the sixteenth pole, Mistress S. drove past both and drew out to win decisively. Mia’s Hope won the three-horse photo for second.
