Minnesota Viking receivers coach Jerry Rhome and Ram defensive backs coach Rod Perry were hired as offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach of the Houston Oilers.

Rhome, 52, coached this season with the Vikings, after four seasons as offensive coordinator of the Phoenix Cardinals.

Perry, 41, spent six years as defensive backs coach for the Rams and Seattle Seahawks. Perry’s son, Rod, was an all-county receiver in 1994 as a sophomore at Mater Dei.

Oiler Coach Jeff Fisher said Rhome, who played eight NFL seasons, including 1970 with Houston, “is a players’ coach, and he has a great offensive mind.”

The Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars will have high-profile, high-priced veterans such as Steve Beuerlein, William (Refrigerator) Perry, Chris Doleman and Gary Clark available in the expansion draft. Also thought to be on the list is Raider defensive lineman Scott Davis.

Teams were required to turn over six names each for the expansion pool by Tuesday. The Chargers and 49ers will add their players after the Super Bowl.

Miami Dolphin quarterback Dan Marino will not need further surgery on his Achilles’ tendon. “I plan to continue to work hard on my rehabilitation during the off-season,” Marino said.

Dick Vermeil, the TV analyst who wanted to coach the Philadelphia Eagles, thinks former defensive coordinator Bud Carson should get the job. Vermeil coached the Eagles to their only Super Bowl appearance in 1981. . . . Wade Phillips, fired as coach of the Denver Broncos after the regular season, was hired as defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. . . . The Jaguars named Lucious Selmon, a former All-America defensive lineman for Oklahoma, the team’s outside linebackers coach.
