Moorpark Has a Shot at Victory but Misses

Despite trailing the entire game, Moorpark College had a chance to steal a victory from Cuesta in a Western State Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday in San Luis Obispo.

But the Raiders’ hopes died when Misty Goodnight missed a shot with four seconds left and Cuesta held on, 42-41, in a Northern Division opener.

Janette Oriza had 16 points for Moorpark (5-16, 3-4 in the WSC).

Valley 73, Pierce 63--Freshman Valery Brady scored 17 points in her first start for the Monarchs (16-7, 6-1) in a WSC game.

Michelle Johnson scored 15 points for Pierce (9-11, 1-5), and Anna Gonzalez and Diane Lakatta added 13 points apiece.

Ventura 69, Oxnard 37--Marina Reyes had 19 points for the Pirates (17-1, 6-0) in a WSC game.

Long Beach State 85, Cal State Northridge 67--The Matadors (0-15) trailed by only three at halftime time but were outscored, 43-28, in the second half of a nonconference game. Shannon Crouse had 22 points for CSUN.

MEN

Valley 96, West L.A. 67--Mike Farmer scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half of a WSC intradivisional game at Valley.

Vernon Simmons added 12 points and 16 rebounds for Valley (12-9, 3-3 in the conference, 1-1 in the South Division).

Cal Lutheran 67, Caltech 48--The Kingsmen cruised to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory by holding Caltech to 39 shots and forcing 21 turnovers. Cal Lutheran played without junior point guard Dave Ulloa, who is out for the season with a broken hand.

Jon Rider had 13 points for the Kingsmen (10-4, 3-0).

Santa Monica 76, College of the Canyons 72--Kevin Fletcher’s layup with 25 seconds remaining was the winning basket in a WSC opener at Valencia.
