After a chase at speeds up to 150 m.p.h., police captured two men suspected of robbing and sexually assaulting a Newport Beach woman they followed home, authorities said Thursday.

One of the suspects, Michael Matthew Flores, 19, of Cypress, was arrested late Wednesday after the high-speed freeway chase involving the woman’s Lexus luxury coupe, Police Sgt. Andy Gonis said.

The second suspect, Marcus Antonio Bedford, 20, of Cerritos, was captured in the drive-in lane of a fast-food restaurant in La Palma shortly afterward, Gonis said. Bedford was driving a sports utility vehicle allegedly stolen by the two men earlier Wednesday in Bellflower, Gonis said.

Both were jailed on suspicion of sexual assault and residential robbery. Bail for each was set at $100,000.

The woman, whose name was withheld, was en route home from a restaurant at about 8:45 p.m. when the assailants decided to follow her “probably because the car caught their attention and she was a lone female,” Gonis said.

After entering her home near Eastbluff Drive and Jamboree Road, the woman decided to leave the garage door open so she could take the trash cans outside, Gonis said.

“She went inside to put her purse up or whatever,” he said, “and when she came back out to the garage, she was confronted with at least one, possibly two guns.”

The two men bound the woman’s hands and led her back inside her home, where she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint and then locked in a closet, according to police. The assailants then ransacked the house and stole stereo equipment, jewelry, at least one gun and other items. The bandits packed the stolen goods in the trunk of the woman’s Lexus and drove off, Gonis said.

Police were notified at about 10:15 p.m., after the woman managed to free herself and went to a neighbor for help, Gonis said.

Police Officer Tom Weizoerick was the first to spot the stolen car heading north on the San Diego Freeway at Harbor Boulevard. Aided by a helicopter, officers from four law enforcement agencies chased the driver of the stolen Lexus to the Garden Grove Freeway interchange, where the vehicle crashed into a center divider, Gonis said.

The driver then fled on foot along an embankment beside the freeway, where he was later arrested, Gonis said. No shots were fired.

Police recovered two handguns from Flores and one from Bedford, who was driving the vehicle reported stolen earlier Wednesday. The driver of that vehicle left the engine running to warm it up and when he returned, it had been stolen, Gonis said.
