Three weeks after winning in his debut, Petionville became a stakes winner Friday in the $77,100 San Miguel Stakes at Santa Anita.

The 11-10 favorite in a field reduced to four starters after the scratch of Fordancingpleasure, Petionville was just off the pace being set by Southern Tempo and Cold N Calculating, then took command in the final eighth of a mile.

Ridden by Chris Antley, the 3-year-old Seeking The Gold colt won by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:09 for six furlongs. Regal Fighter, the 2-1 second choice, rallied from last to beat Cold N Calculating by 1 1/2 lengths.

“We shipped up north (to run in the El Camino Real Derby a week ago), but the track looked a little rough,” trainer Randy Bradshaw said. “They had gotten some rain the night before during the races, so we opted to scratch there and come back here.

“I don’t know where we’ll run next, although the plans are to try and stretch him out next and see if he’ll go two turns.”
