The body of a 70-year-old woman struck and killed by a train as her husband watched helplessly from a few feet away was cremated Monday, her husband said.

Henryk Walocha, 83, said he will spread the ashes of Esther Walocha, his wife of more than 30 years, over the ocean in a memorial service not yet scheduled.

“There’s so much that I have to do, and I’m just falling apart here,” Walocha said.

Esther Walocha was crossing a railroad track about 12:15 p.m. Saturday during the couple’s return from a daily walk when she was struck by a passenger train, according to police.

She died at the scene, near Palisades Drive in the Capistrano Beach section of the city, police said.

Walocha had been a few steps in front of his wife and was urging her to hurry at the time of the crash, he said.

“She must not have heard me,” he said. “She was busy trying to find a dry place to step down so that she wouldn’t slip and fall.”

Police initially said Esther Walocha might have been wearing headphones and might not have heard the train. But Walocha said his wife has never owned a headset.
