Share

A young man died and a teen-ager was seriously injured after one or more assailants opened fire at the two in front of a minimart in Santa Ana, authorities said Wednesday.

Several men walked up to Josue Soriano, 18, and Amit Frias, 13, both of Santa Ana, and shot them several times before fleeing from the store in the 3300 block of West 1st Street, Police Lt. Dave Petko said. He said they left in a dark-colored truck about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

It is unclear how many men actually fired the shots, Police Lt. Bob Helton said.

Both victims were hit in the upper torso and were taken to an area hospital, where Soriano died a few hours later. Frias underwent surgery and remained in critical condition Wednesday, according to police.

Frias’ parents requested that the name of the hospital not be publicized for fear of further endangering their son’s life, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said Soriano had been an active gang member and the shooting is being investigated by the department’s gang unit. Frias is not considered by police to be a gang member, Helton said.

The assailants were still at large Wednesday, Petko said.
