Camarillo-based Siemens Solar Industries has donated 22 solar modules to amateur radio volunteers who operate a communications center on Sulphur Mountain in northwest Ventura County.

The modules will augment batteries at the site maintained by the Sulphur Mountain Repeater Assn., which helps firefighters, police and hospitals communicate during crisis situations.

Previously, the group depended entirely on battery backups when electricity failed. But last year’s earthquake convinced officials that battery power could be depleted before electrical service could be restored.

The Siemens modules generate a total of 1.2 kilowatts--the equivalent of about half the electrical needs of a three-bedroom home.
