ANAHEIM : Run Will Help Fund High School Programs
Hurt by the county’s bankruptcy, 10 schools in the Anaheim Union High School district are trying to ease the pain by raising money to pay for school programs.
The schools are holding a “Good Sport Walk/Run” Sunday near Anaheim Stadium to raise money for music, arts and athletic programs that are in danger of being cut because of the financial crisis.
“The money we raise will play a major role in keeping some of our school programs in operation,” said Warren Stephenson, principal of Western High School, one of the participating schools.
The other high schools are Cypress, Anaheim, Kennedy, Canyon, Savannah, Magnolia, Katella, Loara and Villa Park.
About 2,500 runners, including 2,000 students, are expected to participate, said Louri Purugganan of Anaheim Memorial Hospital, one of the event’s sponsors, which also include Disneyland and the California Angels.
Registration fee is $20, and members of the community may sponsor a runner or enter the race themselves.
The 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer races begin at 7:30 a.m. on the streets around Anaheim Stadium.
The day’s events include free blood pressure checkups, a car show and entertainment.
