A formation of rocks near Irvine Regional Park was the unlikely vantage point for turn-of-the-century robbers looking for prey.

“Robbers Roost” was above Old Park Road, a frequently traveled trail that led from Orange to Irvine Park, the county’s first public park.

The hilltop location gave bandits a clear view of the winding road, allowing them to pick their victims and let others pass, according to the book “Historic Place Names in Orange County.”

Just above Robbers Roost are two boulders where a well-known recluse lived in the 1860s. The boulders are shaped to form a small shelter. The area was known as Hermit Rock.
