Marathon Race-Walk Winner Collapses
Clyde Hatfield, a 61-year-old race-walker from San Diego, suffered an apparent heart attack and collapsed just after crossing the finish line of Sunday’s Long Beach Marathon.
Hatfield, whom a friend said had undergone open-heart surgery some years ago, had just won the 26-mile, 385-yard walk in 4 hours 17 minutes 1 second when he collapsed and was quickly attended to by medical personnel on hand.
He was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Long Beach, where he was listed in critical condition.
