THE PREPS : GIRLS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : Los Alamitos Rallies to Edge Fountain Valley

Los Alamitos scored three goals in the second half to defeat Fountain Valley, 5-4, in a Sunset League girls’ soccer game Tuesday at Fountain Valley.
The victory virtually assures Los Alamitos (15-5-2, 5-3-1) a second-place finish in league, but does not necessarily deny Fountain Valley (16-4-3, 4-3-2) a spot in the playoffs.
“Right now it looks like Los Alamitos will have second place tied up,” Baron Coach Brandee Craig said. “But if for some reason we lose to Esperanza (Thursday), we should still go to the playoffs as a wild card.”
Fountain Valley will be without two key players Thursday. Karrie Layton, a star forward, tore a ligament in her right knee Monday against Edison, and defender Sharon Gillis is out for receiving a red card Tuesday.
The Griffins scored first on a penalty kick by Liz Willemse, and two minutes later Kim Green tied it with a shot over the head of Los Alamitos goalkeeper Lynsey Salsbury.
Willemse scored again on a long crossing shot, but Debbie Blake tied it on a penalty kick.
Blake headed in her second goal to put Fountain Valley ahead, 3-2, and after a corner kick, Fountain Valley’s Mindy Miller passed to her sister, Amber Miller, who made it 4-2.
Ten minutes into the second half, Jaime Price collided with Willemse in the left corner of the penalty box. Gillis, who had received a yellow card earlier, was handed her second, which equaled a red card and forced her out of the game.
Then Price received a yellow card for protesting Gillis’ red card. Ali Ponce took the penalty kick and poked the ball into the right corner of the net.
About 15 minutes later, Loren Muszynski and Carrie Shinen went for the ball and tangled on the ground, and Muszynski got called for a foul. Shinen scored on a direct free kick, tying it, 4-4.
Two minutes later, Cyndi Tredway took the pass from midfield, almost offside, went one-on-one with goalie Kim Rudloff and kicked it over her head.
