PALMDALE — Winds gusting to 50 m.p.h. early Sunday hindered firefighters’ efforts to put out a blaze that destroyed an expensive home in the Lakeview neighborhood, authorities said.
About 27 firefighters responded to the blaze, which broke out in the 36000 block of Geiger Avenue about 6:55 a.m., said Sandy Taggart, a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatch supervisor.
When firefighters arrived, they tried to send a ladder to the second story but were thwarted by high winds, Capt. Dennis Perryman said.
It took more than an hour to bring the fire under control. Damage was estimated at $450,000, Perryman said.
An unidentified man suffered minor facial burns and smoke inhalation when he removed a vehicle from the garage of the home, authorities said. He was taken by family members to a hospital, Taggart said.
Fire Inspector Lawrence Beals said late Sunday that it appeared the fire was started by children playing with matches.
