BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Simi Valley Eliminates Arcadia

Scott Schnetzler scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Simi Valley High to a 63-53 victory over Arcadia on Tuesday night in the first round of the Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs at Arcadia.

Center Dan Van Etten added 16 points and six rebounds for the Pioneers (20-5), who will play top-seeded Long Beach Poly on Friday night at Poly.

Simi Valley, which finished tied with Royal for third in the Marmonte League, took an 18-6 lead in the first quarter.

Arcadia finished 16-11.

DIVISION I-AA

Long Beach Jordan 78, Royal 69--Ryan Nielsen had 22 points and Eric Carlsen added 17 for Royal (15-9) at Long Beach.

Jordan is 15-9.

DIVISION I-A

Palmdale 77, Saugus 55--Shad Martin scored 19 points, and Mike Hamelin and Hassan Phillips each added 15 for the Falcons (19-7) at Palmdale.

Saugus finished 10-15.

Highland 67, Thousand Oaks 63--John Burrell scored eight points in overtime and finished with 22 to lift the Bulldogs at Highland.

Highland (19-6) trailed by 10 at halftime, but Jamal Dedeaux scored 10 of his 19 points during a third-quarter run that cut Thousand Oaks’ lead to one.

Greg Winslow scored 20 points for the Lancers (14-13).

Loyola 54, Hart 39--The Indians trailed, 25-21, at halftime but the Cubs (15-9) went on an 8-0 run early in the third quarter and never trailed again.

“We couldn’t drop a shot,” Hart Coach Mike May said. “When we got down by 12, we extended our defense and they got some easy shots.”

Nick Lewandowski had 11 points for Hart (14-13).

DIVISION II-AA

Crescenta Valley 81, Beverly Hills 67--Forward Brock Jacobsen scored 34 points--including three three-pointers--and guard Jake Willis set a school single-season assist record for Crescenta Valley.

The Falcons (25-1), ranked No. 1 in the Times’ regional poll, led, 33-32, at halftime before surging in the second half.

Willis had nine assists to raise his season total to 246.

Greg Goorjian held the previous school record with 244 assists in 1978.

Beverly Hills finished 14-12.

Burbank 65, Dana Hills 61--Freshman guard Juni Williams hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter to highlight a 19-point outburst by the Foothill League champion Bulldogs.

Matt Baker had 17 points for the Bulldogs (17-8), who led, 47-35, after three quarters.

Dana Hills finished with an 11-14 record.

DIVISION III-AA

Silver Valley 82, Littlerock 77--Littlerock’s attempt to rally from a 20-point deficit fell short at Silver Valley (17-6).

Littlerock (15-10) trailed by only two with two minutes remaining, but the Lobos’ Bronson Pitts (21 points) and John George (13) fouled out.

DIVISION III-A

St. Francis 69, La Canada 67--Rey Khachatourian scored five of his 10 points in overtime--including a three-point basket with 30 seconds to play--as St. Francis upset La Canada.

Mihail Papadopulous scored 26 points for St. Francis (11-15). Ted Steben added 10 points.

Chris Evelyn had 30 points for La Canada (18-8). Charlie Petit added 24 points, including two three-pointers.

Moorpark 59, Cabrillo 47--The Musketeers (17-7) survived a late surge by Cabrillo. Senior Mike McKenzie scored 16 points for Moorpark.

Senior Brian Fortman added 14 points and senior Stephen Jennings added 12.

Cabrillo finished 14-9.

Notre Dame 72, Blair 55--Mission League most valuable player Tommy Zapata had 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Knights.

The senior guard had nine points in the third quarter, as the Knights (21-6) made their move after being tied, 34-34, at halftime.

Notre Dame outscored Blair (9-14) in the third quarter, 21-12.

Collin Plume had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

DIVISION IV-AA

Crespi 57, Marshall Fundamental 47--Gianandrea Marcaccini scored 28 points for the Celts (12-13) in a wild-card game.

Bryan Spaulding added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Crespi, which closed out the second quarter with a 12-1 run to take a 30-26 lead at halftime.

DIVISION IV-A

Paraclete 91, St. Genevieve 82--Danny Stephens scored 18 points and Vinny Pagan added 17 for Paraclete (13-10) in a wild-card game.

Randy Iaccino scored 34 points for the Valiants (9-13).

DIVISION V-A

Cornerstone Christian 78, Coastal Christian 57--Eric Olson had 25 points and eight rebounds and Jason Best added 24 points and 12 rebounds for Cornerstone Christian (17-6).

DIVISION V-AA

Campbell Hall 57, Viewpoint 44--Heleman Wallace had 19 points and nine rebounds and Mike Appel added 17 points for the Vikings (11-14) at Campbell Hall.

Buckley 78, Le Lycee 30--Junior forward T.J. Jackson had 21 points, eight steals, six assists and four blocked shots for Buckley (13-10).
