At the Garden Grove League wrestling finals Saturday, La Quinta sophomore Trent Zapeda took second in the 112-pound class to qualify for this week’s section individual preliminaries.

La Quinta had canceled its wrestling program this season because of low turnout the last few years. After some complaints, the program was revived but it was too late to put the Aztecs back on the league schedule.

The Aztecs participated in a few tournaments and nonleague matches and although they had no league matches, they were allowed to wrestle in the league finals. And Zapeda made the most of it.

Fountain Valley’s Kristin Moro has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for the University of San Diego. Moro, an outside hitter, was a two year All-Sunset League selection and a member of the team that reached the 1993 Southern Section Division II finals.

Alessio Smith of Newport Harbor has signed to play soccer for Cal State Fullerton, his mother, Patricia Smith, said. Smith has played four years on the varsity and was named to the All-Southern Section team last season and has been an All-Sea View League pick the last two seasons. She was named the league’s offensive player of the year last season.

Century and Corona Centennial each opened their campuses five years ago, and the two schools often received each other’s mail in the early years.

“I guess vendors got us mixed up,” Century girls’ basketball Coach Jeff Watts said.

If there was any mail left over from those days, the schools could have exchanged it Tuesday in Corona where Centennial beat Century, 53-47, in double overtime. The boys’ basketball Division I-A playoff game was the first meeting between the schools.
