COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Outfielders Help Maulsen Throw a No-Hitter for Ventura

Jennifer Maulsen pitched a no-hitter, missing a perfect game by only a sixth-inning walk, to lead Ventura College to a 6-0 softball victory over San Bernardino Valley in a nonconference game Thursday at Ventura.

Maulsen, a freshman from Buena High, struck out only two, but she got solid defensive help. The Pirates (3-4) made no errors and two Ventura right fielders threw out three runners at first base on ground balls to the outfield.

Ventura left fielder Deanna Estrada was four for four. Twins Jennifer and Tammy Peck each had two hits. Amy Attebery had a double and three runs batted in.

BASEBALL

Valley 10, Pasadena City 8--Lancer pitchers walked 13, including four in the bottom of the sixth inning, to help the Monarchs score six runs. Colyn Van Buren had the only run-scoring hit of the inning, a double, and Valley also was aided by an error and a hit batter.

Lorenzo Marquez (1-0) got the victory and Clint Marcus pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Antelope Valley 8, Cuesta 1--David Glick threw a four-hitter, struck out 10 and walked three for Antelope Valley in the nonconference game at Cuesta.

Tim Pennell had three hits and three RBIs, and Todd Barnes also had three hits for Antelope Valley (5-3-1).

MEN’S TRACK

Moorpark 74, Bakersfield 70, Santa Barbara City 26, West L.A. 13--Brian Lubocki set a school record of 15 feet 2 inches in the pole vault and Jeff Wilson won the 1,500 (4 minutes 0.4 seconds) and 5,000 (15:16.3) for the Raiders in the Western State Conference opener at Bakersfield.

Lubocki broke by one inch the school record Jeff Beam set last week.

Ventura 101, Glendale 70, Canyons 6--James DeLeon won the pole vault (13-6) and javelin (149-5) for Ventura in a WSC meet at Glendale.

WOMEN’S TRACK

Glendale 60, Ventura 37, Canyons 28--Josephina Sanchez won the 1,500 meters in 5:07.0 and the 3,000 in 10:56.8 for Ventura in a WSC meet at Glendale.

Moorpark 80 1/2, Bakersfield 54, West L.A. 23 1/2, Santa Barbara City 9--Avonya Linton (100 and 200) and Heather Hanger (100 high and 400 low hurdles) each won two events for the Raiders in a WSC meet at Bakersfield.
