SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ SOCCER : Boyce Boosts El Modena in Overtime

Justin Boyce scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Link Elliott five minutes into the second 10-minute overtime period to give El Modena a 2-0 victory over Katella in the first round of Southern Section Division II boys’ soccer playoffs.

Brett Taylor clinched the victory with 30 seconds remaining off an assist from Robbie Merchant. Ryan Frazier had nine saves as the Vanguards registered their 11th shutout of the season. They will play Santa Barbara Tuesday. A coin flip today will decide the home team. El Modena is 12-3-5. Katella finished 6-11-7.

In another Division II game:

Orange 4, Diamond Bar 0--Victor Diaz scored twice and Lalo Rodriguez and Angelo Cutrona added the other goals for Orange (13-7-4). Neil Van Zuniden and Aldo Zuniga recorded their ninth combined shutout.

In Division IV:

La Mirada 2, La Habra 2--La Mirada advances to the second round after winning on penalty kicks, 4-2.

Sonora 1, Lakewood Mayfair 0--Aaron Jenkins scored in the second half and Steve Mitzen completed the shutout with six saves for visiting Sonora (12-9-2). The Raiders play San Marino on Tuesday at a site to be determined.

Sunny Hills 2, Corona Centennial 1 (sudden death)--Andy Volpp scored five minutes into sudden-death overtime to break a 1-1 tie for Sunny Hills (19-3-1). Regulation play ended in a scoreless tie and each team scored in overtime. Sunny Hills will play La Puente in the second round.

In Division V:

Brethren Christian 2, San Jacinto 1 (sudden death)--Substitute Eric Jensen scored his first career goal three minutes into sudden death to lead Brethren Christian (15-4-2). Jensen, normally a fullback, was put in the game in the 100th minute at halfback.

The Warriors play Pasadena Poly in the second round.
