COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress’ Ojeda Has a Big Day in Tournament

Augie Ojeda was four for five with two runs batted in as Cypress defeated Southwestern, 9-5, Friday in the second game of the Golden Coast Baseball Classic. Ojeda had a two-run single in the Chargers’ four-run eighth inning that broke a 5-5 tie.

Reliever Rick Clagget pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings to pick up his first victory.

Mark Selway had two hits and two RBIs in Cypress’ 7-2 victory over Los Angeles Harbor. Keith Ginter also had two hits.

The Chargers (11-1-1) will face Sequoias at 10 a.m. today and Monterey Peninsula at 2 p.m. as pool play continues.

In other tournament games:

Golden West 13, Monterey Peninsula 2 (7, time limit)--Garrett Vitale had two doubles, a triple and four RBIs for Golden West. The Rustlers (5-5) play L.A. Harbor today at 10 a.m. and Southwestern at 2 p.m.

Orange Coast 4, Monterey Peninsula 3--Fountain Valley graduate Mark Gardner struck out 12 in gaining his third consecutive victory. Gardner hasn’t given up an earned run in 22 innings. Orange Coast is 5-5.

Sequoias 3, Golden West 1--Eric Plooy gave up four hits in nine innings for Sequoias (4-3). Golden West’s only run came in the seventh inning when Nathan Freeman scored on a fielder’s choice.

Sequoias 3, Orange Coast 1--Roger Harris hit a leadoff home run in the first inning for Sequoias (5-3). Orange Coast stranded 12.

The Pirates (5-6) play Southwestern at 10 a.m. and L.A. Harbor at 2 p.m.
