THE PREPS : SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION II-AA GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Marina Doesn’t Let History Repeat

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

One upset is enough for Marina, which defeated San Clemente, 67-46, in a Division II-AA girls’ basketball playoff game Saturday night at Triton Gym.

The Vikings were embarrassed earlier this season by San Clemente, 61-51. In that game, the Tritons trailed, 12-0, early in the first quarter, but came back, outscoring Marina by 32 points in the final 22 minutes.

The Vikings were not about to let it happen again.

“It was a different story,” Viking Coach Peter Bonney said. “We had good balance tonight. Last time they shot over 50%. They are good shooters, but not that good.”

The Tritons (17-11) shot only 30% Saturday night and made 14 of 27 from the free-throw line.

The Tritons lacked any type of inside game, and were outrebounded, 32-24.

Marina’s balanced attack began with junior forward Sonya Bryant, who took control in the first quarter by scoring 12 points, four of those on offensive boards.

The Vikings dominated the inside, outrebounding San Clemente, 8-3, in the first quarter. They took a 17-8 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, with senior Shandy Robbins and Bryant in foul trouble, Bonney juggled his lineup. The Vikings were outscored, 10-8, and led by seven points at halftime.

In the second half, junior forward Kirsten Cappel scored 22 points and pulled down six rebounds for Marina.

“Kirsten, in the third quarter, really stepped it up with our two leading scorers out,” Bonney said. “It was a good job by all of our subs.”
