Cat lovers are up in arms over a Dade County proposal to license and vaccinate cats for rabies each year, and they plan to hold a protest today.

Organizers said activists will wear cat masks and squirt themselves with shaving cream to debunk the rabies scare. They say the county’s plan will in effect subsidize dog owners with the proceeds of the “cat tax.”

Under the proposed ordinance, which will be put to a vote Tuesday, vaccinations will cost $5 for each neutered cat and $15 for unneutered cats. If adopted, officials plan to reduce vaccinations for neutered dogs by $5 to $15.
