COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nichols’ Debut Is a Big Hit for Ventura

In his first at-bat of the season, pinch-hitter Jamal Nichols hit a two-run double with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Ventura College a 4-3 victory over Glendale Thursday in a nonconference baseball game at Ventura.

Nichols, a sophomore from Thousand Oaks High and an All-Western State Conference player last season, sat out the first two weeks because of academic problems.

Brandon Knight (2-1) pitched the top of the ninth and opened the bottom of the inning with a single for Ventura (5-3-1).

Pete Paciorek and Luis Alcarez each had two hits for Glendale (5-5-1).

The Master’s 13, Point Loma Nazarene 6--Mark Vail hit two two-run home runs and the Mustangs won a nonconference game.

Matt Henzie, Jeff Bennett, Dan Prentice and Derek Bell each had two hits for Master’s (8-3), which won its sixth consecutive game.

Moorpark 6, Harbor 5--Pat Queenan had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for the Raiders in a nonconference game.

Valley 6, El Camino 6--Tony Gennaro pitched out of a two-on, no-out jam in the eighth inning of an 11-inning game called because of darkness.

Gennaro had four strikeouts in three innings and gave up one hit.

Valley (3-8-1) had 17 hits. Javier Dorado, Jorge Dorado and Steve Zorn each had two hits.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chaffey 78, Valley 58--The Monarchs could not recover from a 44-26 halftime deficit in a second-round game of the state regional at Chaffey.

Freshman guard Valery Brady scored 16 points and Maria Fulay added 11 for Valley (21-12), which split two previous games against Chaffey (25-9).

Canyons 73, Orange Coast 64--Kyetra Brown scored 18 points and had nine assists as the Cougars (29-5) beat Orange Coast in the state regional despite making only three of 21 three-point shots.

Stephanie Labor had 16 points for Canyons.
