Jair Fray hit a 15-foot basket with two seconds left to give Fairfax a 46-45 win over Fremont in a 4-A Division semifinal game Friday at Harbor College.

“That was a great shot that Fray made at the end of the game,” Fremont Coach Sam Sullivan said. “I called that the Lady Luck shot. The ball bounced up and into the basket.”

The game featured 33 lead changes and ties before Fray hit his winning shot.

“We were real fortunate to win the game,” Fairfax Coach Harvey Kitani said. “The shot could have gone either way.”

With the Lions ahead 44-43, Antonio Hines hit a running layup with 19.3 seconds left to give Fremont the lead.

Israel Plaza then drove the length of the court to pass the ball to Fray for the game-winning shot.

“The shot felt great,” Fray said. “It felt special. This team has a lot of heart and that’s why we won it.”

Fairfax point guard Dwayne Davis, who had 13 points, fouled out with 1:42 left in the game. Fremont point guard Dony Wilcher, who had 12 points, fouled out with 40 seconds remaining.

Both teams shot well from the free-throw line. Fremont made 13 of 16 attempts; Fairfax 21 of 28.

“I feel bad for the kids,” said Sullivan, whose teams lost to Crenshaw in the semifinals last season, but received an at-large bit to the Southern California Regionals.
