HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Peninsula Holds Off Simi Valley

Tracey Rosen made a three-point basket with 18 seconds remaining to lead No. 8 Palos Verdes Peninsula to a 78-75 victory over No. 16 Simi Valley in a Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinal at Royal High.

Monique Langston scored 24 points and Allison Fortner contributed 15 for Peninsula (25-4). Tawnee Cooper scored 27 points to lead Simi Valley (24-5).

No. 1 Irvine Woodbridge 75, Crescenta Valley 46--Erin Stovall scored 22 points and led a stifling Woodbridge defense with eight steals and Krissy Duperron added 14 points for the Warriors (27-1) in a II-AA quarterfinal victory over Crescenta Valley (23-7) at Woodbridge.

No. 2 Newbury Park 65, Redondo 36--Julie Wastell scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Sea Hawks (27-1) over Redondo (23-5) in a III-AA semifinal at Thousand Oaks High.

Jann Thorpe scored 15 points and Kara McKeown added 13 and 16 rebounds for Newbury Park, which extended its winning streak to 22 games.

No. 3 Ventura Buena 70, No. 18 Palmdale 31--The Bulldogs (22-2) scored 19 of the first 20 points on their way to a I-A quarterfinal victory at Palmdale (21-4).

No. 7 Riverside North 64, Huntington Beach 52--Huntington Beach (16-12) was eliminated from the playoffs despite having four players score in double figures in a II-AA quarterfinal loss to the Huskies (26-1) at Huntington Beach.

No. 9 Alemany 65, Westminster 34--The Indians (22-4) scored the game’s first 12 points en route to a victory over the Lions (17-11) in a II-AA quarterfinal at L.A. Baptist High.

No. 14 Long Beach Poly 67, Victor Valley 53--Laneka Allen scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Poly (21-3) over Victor Valley (20-8) in a I-AA quarterfinal game at Victor Valley.

No. 15 Pasadena Muir 59, El Dorado 56--Kyla Johnson scored 17 points, Tomisha Hughes had 17 rebounds and six blocks and Shannon Lee had 12 steals and six assists to lead the Mustangs (23-2) to a II-A quarterfinal victory over Golden Hawks (20-5) at Muir.

No. 19 Huntington Beach Marina 70, Huntington Beach Ocean View 47--Shandy Robbins scored 16 points to lead the Vikings (21-6) to a victory over the Seahawks (21-8) in a II-AA quarterfinal at Marina.
