SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : ROUNDUP : Panthers Put Redondo on Beach, 65-36

Julie Wastell scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Newbury Park High girls’ basketball team to a 65-36 rout of Redondo in a Division III-AA semifinal Saturday night at Thousand Oaks High.

The Panthers (27-1) will face Bishop Montgomery, which beat Newport Harbor, 64-41, in the section championship game at the Pyramid in Long Beach.

Jann Thorpe scored 15 points and Kara McKeown added 13 points and 16 rebounds for Newbury Park, which extended its winning streak to 22 games.

DIVISION I-AA Quarterfinals

Peninsula 78, Simi Valley 75--Tracey Rosen hit a three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining for the Panthers (25-4) at Royal High.

Tawnee Cooper scored 27 points for the Pioneers (24-5), including two free throws which tied the game, 75-75.

DIVISION II-AA Quarterfinals

Woodbridge 75, Crescenta Valley 46--Amirah Leonard had 15 points and Michelle Greco added 13 as the Falcons (23-7) fell to the defending division champions.

Erin Stovall had 22 points for Woodbridge (27-2).

DIVISION II-A Quarterfinals

Edison 57, Ventura 46--The Chargers (19-6) ended the Cougars’ playoff run at Ventura (18-7).

DIVISION III-A Quarterfinals

Notre Dame 55, Costa Mesa 50--Maggie Dixon had 15 points, five assists and five steals at Notre Dame as the unseeded Knights (20-6) earned their first trip to the Southern Section semifinals.

Notre Dame used a 7-0 run to take a 37-25 lead in the third quarter and didn’t look back.

DIVISION IV-A Semifinals

Crossroads 58, Village Christian 48--The Crusaders played Crossroads virtually even in every quarter but the second at Brentwood High. The Roadrunners outscored the Crusaders, 24-15, in the telltale quarter.

Junior guard Lindy James had 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Crusaders (21-5).
