GIRLS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING 1995: PREVIEW : Six Teams To Watch : IRVINE

Share

Coach: Scott Hinman (ninth year).

1994: 9-2, 7-0 in the Sea View League. Won the league title and took second at the Division II finals, the best girls’ finish in school’s history.

Key returners: Amy Aldinger, Jr.; Alice Huszcz, Sr.; Lana Kraus, So.; Melissa Lloyd (diving), Jr.; Analia Piccollo, Sr.; Wendy O’Brien, Jr.; Erin Rollins, So.; Molly Zak, Sr.

Key newcomers: None.

Outlook: All of Hinman’s top swimmers from last year will be back. However, unlike last year, when Irvine’s only league competition came from Corona del Mar and Woodbridge, the Vagueros will find a formidable opponent in a talented El Toro team, led by Katie Lowes, a 100- and 200-freestyle specialist. The Lowes factor should be countered by O’Brien, who was named swimmer of the meet and won the 50- and 100-freestyle races in the Division II finals last year. In addition, Zak has become a premier butterflyer and might be among the top two in the county. But Irvine’s strongest suit remains its medley and freestyle relay teams.
