PREP ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Makes Tournament Final

Ed Marquez was three for four with three runs scored to lead Mater Dei in an 8-4 victory over Bellflower St. John Bosco in the semifinals of the Newport-Elks baseball tournament Thursday. Teammate Scott Daley was also three for four and drove in a run.

The Monarchs (3-0) play the winner of the Esperanza-Tustin game, which was delayed because of darkness and will resume today, in the final Saturday at Tustin High School.

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Newport Harbor 4, Bolsa Grande 2--Joe Urban gave up six hits in nine innings. He also went three for three, including a home run and a double, and had three RBIs as the Sailors (2-1) took fifth place.

Orange Lutheran 2, Costa Mesa 0--Jim Brown’s second-inning home run was enough for Adam Cavaness, who pitched a four-hit shutout for visiting Orange Lutheran (2-1) in a quarterfinal game. John Schroeder was three for three for tournament host Costa Mesa (1-2).

In the Glendora tournament:

Fullerton 8, Rowland Heights Rowland 5--Catcher Mario Ramirez had two home runs, a double and three RBIs for Fullerton (2-1) in the quarterfinals.

In nonleague golf:

Sunny Hills 387, Valencia 404--Terry Noe shot four-under-par 69 at Los Coyotes and Alta Vista country clubs to lead Sunny Hills (1-0). John Lee and James Wooley each shot 74 for Valencia (1-1).

In nonleague boys’ track and field:

El Toro 72, Mission Viejo 64--Sophomore Elliott Parks led the host Chargers (1-0), winning the high jump (6-4), long jump (20-1 1/4) and triple jump (39-10 1/4).

Woodbridge 82, Century 61, Trabuco Hills 15--Deron Gibbs of Woodbridge (1-0) won three events--the 100 meters in 11.3, the 200 in 23.5 and the long jump in 21-2. He also ran the anchor leg on the winning 400 relay.

In nonleague girls’ track and field:

Mission Viejo 69, El Toro 57--Ashley Bethel, participating in her first high school dual meet, had three victories for the visiting Diablos (1-0).
