BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING 1995: PREVIEW : SIX TEAMS TO WATCH : LAGUNA HILLS

Share

Coach: Chris Duncan (second year).

1994: 9-3, 5-0 in the Pacific Coast League. Had no problem winning league, but defending champions finished second at Division III finals.

Key returners: Brandon Campbell, So.; Brian Dober, Sr.; Victor Fung, Sr.; Preston Hammontree, Sr.; Mark Kwok, Sr.; Matt Kwok (diving), So.; Tyler Maertz, Jr.; Jeff Nicols (diving), Sr.; Lin-Chin Yang (diving), Sr.

Key newcomers: None.

Outlook: The Hawks move up to Division II but should have no problems with the help of Kwok, who was swimmer of the meet last year at the Division III finals. Kwok’s butterfly is awesome and his 200 individual medley time should put him among the top three in the county. Kwok’s 500 freestyle is decent; in fact, he had the sixth fastest time in the county last season. Also back is Hammontree, who will lead Laguna Hills in the middle distance events. In diving, Laguna Hills will be anchored by senior Nicols, whose 517.15 points in the division finals last year broke an an 11-year-old section record.
