WHAT DID HE SAY? It may seem like the county’s bankruptcy gets blamed for just about everything. Even shouting. Because of budget cuts, the county had to take away the Waste Management Commission’s public address system. . . . With no microphones, it was difficult for anyone to hear commissioners at their Santa Ana meeting last week. Says chairman Phil Sansone: “It’s one more thing that went with the bankruptcy.”

TINY BANGS? This week’s cross-examination of Detective Mark Fuhrman in the O.J. Simpson trial promises to be dramatic. The defense contends Fuhrman is a racist trying to frame Simpson. . . . But Newport Beach attorney Layne Phillips, serving as a legal analyst for KNBC-TV, warns the defense has a tough job: “It’s one thing to proclaim to the world that Fuhrman is a rogue, racist cop. It’s another to prove it in court. With Rosa Lopez, the defense promised us a bang but gave us a whimper.”

FUN AT THE BANK: Lee Trevino will be a sure crowd favorite when he tees it up at this week’s Senior PGA stop at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa. The colorful, quick-quipping golfer has one good reason for laughing: his bank account. Last year, Trevino won six tournaments on the tour, was Player of the Year, and won $1.2 million. . . . Trevino is also lead money winner for the Senior and regular tours combined, at more than $8 million. That’s more than half a million dollars ahead of second-place Ray Floyd.

NEW MISSION: Mission San Juan Capistrano claims third as a county tourist attraction--behind Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm--with 400,000 visitors a year. It’s funded only from visitors fees and contributions. But it turns out some corporate entities shy away from donating because it was seen as a religious organization. . . . The answer: a new Mission Conservancy Fund. Now, says mission administrator Jerry Miller, you can support the mission as a cultural institution--and still get a tax deduction.
