COURT TV: What do prospective jurors do in their spare time in the jury room? At the county Courthouse in Santa Ana, they’re watching the O.J. Simpson trial. It’s regularly been on both TVs in the jury room. Some are interested, but most see it as a time-killer. . . . Sharon Brecken of Placentia said Monday that most were like her--not happy to be there: How unhappy? Brecken said standing in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles was “even more interesting” than waiting to be called for jury duty.

SWALLOW THIS: Sunday’s that historic day for San Juan Capistrano, when the swallows annually return to the Mission (B3). Their numbers have plummeted in recent years, after earthquake retrofitting work wiped out hundreds of nests. . . . But if it’s swallows you want, the South Coast Audubon Society suggests you also take its tour of nearby San Juan Creek that day. Says spokesman Ken Fortune: “Swallow sightings at the creek are all but guaranteed.”

BABY TALK: At 91, Dr. Benjamin Spock still sells copies of his 1946 “Baby and Child Care”--half a million copies a year--and is still busy on the speakers’ circuit. . . . Friday he addresses local leaders at a “State of Our Children” lunch at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Turns out Spock is good friends with Dr. David Lang, CHOC’s medical education director, who helped arrange Spock’s visit. . . . His topic: The challenge of raising children in the ‘90s.

OH SAY CAN YOU SING? How nervous would you be singing the National Anthem in front of a capacity Los Angeles Laker crowd? Or doing play-by-play with the legendary Laker announcer Chick Hearn? . . . It doesn’t scare some people. They’re lining up Tuesday nights at six National Sports Bar locations--four in Orange County--in play-by-play contests and a “Star-Spangled Banner” sing-off.
