Glenn McDonald, Long Beach State women’s basketball coach since 1991, has been reassigned, he said Monday night.

McDonald, 42, will be an assistant to the director of sports, athletics and recreation. Overseeing the 49ers’ intramural and club programs and acquiring temporary tenants for the Pyramid will be among McDonald’s new duties.

“I’m disappointed,” said McDonald, who has one year remaining on his contract. “I’m sure the university, my players and my staff would all have liked a better won-lost record.

“But I love this university and I look forward to all the challenges and responsibility in my new position.”

Long Beach has started a national search for McDonald’s replacement. An administration source said Athletic Director Dave O’Brien seeks a high-profile person who has had major success as a coach, assistant or player.

A 1974 graduate of Long Beach and a No. 1 draft pick of the Boston Celtics, McDonald had a career record of 54-58. Long Beach was 13-14, 10-8 in the Big West Conference this season under McDonald, who was an assistant to former Coach Joan Bonvicini for six years.
